Following the success of 2007’s Eye clinic, we are returning to Anandpur hospital in India in December 2008!
This year we are aiming higher and are looking to carry out both an Eye clinic, and a Dental clinic!!!
The funds raised this year will go towards:
| 1) A dental clinic to be established in the hospital.
|
The Clinics:
Eye Clinic:
Vision is said to be one sense that can change your life forever. The Optometrists and helpers will be visiting surrounding villages which were not covered last year. They aim to conduct a complete vision screening, refraction (i.e. detecting if one needs spectacles) & provision of spectacles if required. Appropriate referral to Anandpur Hospital will be made for treatment of any eye diseases detected. This early detection is of huge importance as many patients will only attend a hospital at great efforts at a very late stage of disease, making treatment more difficult or sometimes even impossible.
Suniti Jobanputra BSc (Hons) MCOptom – Optometrist, UK
Neelam Patel BSc (Hons) MCOptom – Optometrist, UK
Amar Patel - Undergraduate at Washington University, USA
Dental Clinic:
Tooth pain has been described as one of the most intense forms of pain. Many times this pain can be relieved easily by a dentist. In addition, poor oral health can sometimes impact on ones general health; hence screening and education is vital. Prior to our arrival, the dental clinic will be advertised throughout the state to inform people of the clinic. Since there has been no dental relief for a number of years it is expected that large volumes of people will attend! Through our fundraising initiatives in the UK & USA the dental clinic will be set up and ready to use. As well as providing treatment, the dentists will provide oral health advice, particularly on the adverse effects of smoking and excessive Paan use. Children and adults will be educated on how to keep their teeth healthy and sustain good oral health. Oral hygiene kits will also be distributed.

Dr. Priya Thakrar BDS (Hons) – Dentist, UK

Both dentists and optometrists will be providing lectures and practical training to the local hospital staff so that valuable work can be carried on after they leave!
‘If you give man a fish, it will feed him for one day. If you teach him fishing he can feed himself forever’ (Chinese Proverb)
Dance Workshop:
It has been said ‘Motion Creates Emotion’. The art of dance connects those with their inner spirit, joy and excitement. A dance workshop by Rakhi Sood will follow to help lift the spirits of the village children! Rakhi is a professional dancer, choreographer, and teacher in the UK. She runs her own dance school, and wishes to spread the joy of dance amongst these remote villages and will be assisted by her student Priya Mistry. Amit Patel will also be assisting with the workshop, distribution and will provide a helping hand to the clinics in the villages.
